Gifts For Mama

 

Four brothers left home for college, seeking success.  The years went by, and after much hard work they became successful and wealthy professionals.. Some years later they met for one of their infrequent dinners together, and discussed the gifts they were planning to give their elderly mother for Christmas.

The first said, "I had a big house built for Mama."

The second said, "That house is now far better than ever because I had a hundred thousand dollar multi-media theater built inside it."

The third said "I had my Mercedes dealer deliver an SL600 to her."

The fourth said, "We know how Mama used to love reading the Bible, but she can't read it anymore because she can't see very well. I met this preacher who told me about a parrot that can recite the entire Bible. It took 20 preachers 12 years to teach the bird. I had to contribute $500,000 to the church, but it was worth it. Mama just has to name the chapter and verse and the parrot will recite it."

The brothers were impressed with each other's gifts.   A few weeks after the holiday the elderly lady sent out her thank you notes.

She wrote: "Milton, the house you built is so huge that I use only two rooms in it.  I'll never get used to such an enormous place.  But thanks anyway."

"Maxwell, I am too old to travel. I stay home, and I have my groceries delivered, so I never drive the Mercedes. The thought was good, though. Thanks."

"Michael, you gave me an expensive theater with Dolby sound. It could hold 50 people, but all my friends are gone.  And my hearing and eyesight are quite poor, so I'll never use the theater.  Thank you for the gesture just the same."

"Dearest Maynard, you were the only son to have the good sense to not give me an extravagant gift. The chicken was delicious. Thank you."
